Government Degree College Nandasain

Government Degree College, Nandasain was established in the year 2015 under the aegis of the Department of Higher Education, Government of Uttarakhand, with the singular purpose of bringing accessible and affordable higher education to the youth of the remote Himalayan hill region. Situated in the village of Nandasain, near Nauti, in the Adibadri tehsil of Chamoli district, the college occupies a serene setting amid the Garhwal Himalayas, at approximately 30.0539° North latitude and 79.2865° East longitude, at an elevation that places it firmly within the mid-Himalayan belt overlooking the Alaknanda valley.

Before the college was established, students from Nandasain, Nauti, and the surrounding villages had to travel long distances, often several hours by bus, to reach the nearest degree college. The founding of GDC Nandasain changed that reality, allowing hundreds of first-generation learners, particularly young women from the hill villages, to pursue a Bachelor's degree without leaving their home region. In this sense, the college is as much a social institution as an academic one, anchoring the aspirations of an entire community of hill villages within a short and manageable distance.

The college is affiliated to Sridev Suman Uttarakhand University, Badshahithaul, Tehri Garhwal, and is recognised by the University Grants Commission under Section 2(f). The Faculty of Arts currently offers a three-year Bachelor of Arts programme across six well-established subjects — Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Political Science, Economics, and Sociology — taught by a dedicated faculty committed to both classroom instruction and the personal growth of their students.

Beyond the classroom, the college has built an active co-curricular ecosystem — a National Service Scheme unit engaged in community outreach, an Annual Sports Program that draws students from across the region, and a growing library that serves as a quiet refuge for exam preparation and independent study. The college functions primarily as a day-scholar institution, with the majority of its students commuting daily from Nandasain, Nauti, and the neighbouring hill hamlets, a fact that has shaped everything from class timings to the design of student support services. Scholarship schemes for SC, ST, and OBC students, along with fee concessions administered through the state government, have played a significant role in widening access to higher education for economically weaker families in the region. Faculty members regularly conduct extra classes and doubt-clearing sessions ahead of university examinations, a practice that has contributed to steadily improving pass percentages over recent academic sessions. The college also maintains close ties with its early batches of alumni, several of whom have gone on to government service, teaching, and further postgraduate study, and who continue to be invited back for motivational sessions with current students. Environmental awareness is woven into the campus culture, with tree plantation drives, cleanliness campaigns, and NSS-led community sanitation programmes forming a regular part of the academic year.
